Ready for more decorations???

..........I have collected so much over the many years and have more than should ever be displayed in one small house. For a few years, right before time to decorate I have chosen a few things to put down by the street with a FREE sign on them. It only takes minutes for them to disappear. I am glad for someone else to get pleasure from my excess. I had a house double the size of this one before. I have not bought much in the last several years but each year I see a thing or two that have been hard to resist!  This year especially I have seen soooooooo many really neat things shown on facebook and blogs.

I saw something very similar to this and just loved it. I started searching for some off-white mittens but in Central Florida as you might guess, mittens are not a popular item.  I put a plea out on facebook for locals to keep a watch for some for me. I was thrilled when a friend came here from London last week and what did she bring me???   ~  these mittens. I had them decorated and on the door the next day.  I love the simplicity of this. My favorite new decoration. For several years I "pined" for a pair of white ice skates to use like this and never got any and now I am quite happy with the mittens.

This is just inside the front door.  My little foyer and one wall is all that is painted this shade of green.

This is along the same foyer wall. Flashes and candles make this wall paint look more yellowish green than it normally looks.

I always display one of my favorite cards that I'm sending on the table here. I have a scrapbook that I have placed them in for many years. It is interesting to see how they have progressed. For a few years each one had a rabbit on it.  Remember when rabbits were "the thing".

Across from the table stands a grandfather clock and this little pillow is hanging on it. When crosstitching was popular I did a lot of it.  This santa picture is one of my favorite things I did.

Beside the clock is a small closet and this stocking hangs on one door.  The card bucket which you have already seen is on the other side. The bucket is starting to fill up with cards.

Back when candlewicking became popular again I did some of that and this stocking was my first project. Sure chose a challenge for the first thing but was pleased with the results.

This is taken from near the foyer and looking from corner to corner of the L shaped living/dining room.  You can see I have a vaulted ceiling in the living room part only.  I am so glad for it - keeps me from feeling so closed in with this small house.  You will also notice I have filled it with large furniture.

Standing at the same place but looking down the living room wall, through the screened porch and all the way to my back-door neighbor's house. Hopefully, I will be able someday to control the light on my pictures better.

Standing at the porch entrance and looking back the other direction.

Had I put my big tree up it would be here where you saw the little rocker with the candlewick stocking. And, it would look exactly like it did this year. It is not pre-lit unfortunately - such a chore for me to put the lights on!

A close-up of the tree.  I love the victorian look. You will remember I have some of my old-fashioned ornaments that I use to use on the tree displayed in a big wooden bowl in this room.

The little white church candle holder.  One of the many treasures I have come home with over the years
from Christmas parties.

Between the hutch and buffet in the dining room.

This candle holder was a "container" at my Gifts From the Kitchen Brunch one year. It stays here year round but I only light the candle at Christmas time.

This post will take the place of my Thursday "Tea Things" post.
Next time I will show you more from the kitchen and a few other spots through the house.

  4. Your house looks fabulous! I love the candlewick stocking! and you're right not many mittens here in Orlando! In answer to where to get waterslide decals, I print them myself I did a post on it here http://thepolkadotcloset.blogspot.com/2011/03/using-water-slide-decals.html

  5. You're like me and had to get rid of some of your excess decorations. I've been married for almost 25 yrs so I've accumulated more than I'll ever use. I took some of mine to Goodwill, but most of them went to a consignment store. I love your door decoration using the mittens! That is just such a cute idea. You've got a lot of pretty decorations. Thanks for stopping by and visiting me too.

  6. Your first sentence in this post is my sentiment exactly! But resistance is futile and I end up getting some new decoration for Christmas that just makes my heart skip a beat and I can't help myself for that. Hey, did you receive my card, yet?

  7. Hi Betty,

I just saw a comment you made on another blog about making eye contact and smiling at people while you are out and about. I too, believe in the basic goodness of most people. You now have a new follower! Looking forward to reading your blog. I am not a blogger, but love reading and enjoying the photos. Your home looks warm and cozy.

  8. Thanks for sharing your decorating talent. Your home is so warm and cheerful, bright colors making such a statement. I too love decorating and my Christmas theme is always victorian. Love the large white mittens, my oldest granddaughter can sew me a set for this great ideal. I am fortunate to have a large pair of white ice skates and a sweet small pair which I incorporated in my front door wreath one year, it's such fun to think out of the box. You can be very proud of your many talents. Thanks again for sharing.

  9. Hi Betty, Love the mitten door decoration! A couple of questions for you... Are mittens sown together? How are they attached to the door? and did you weight them with anything or use styrofoam to secure the greenery?

    1. Thank you. Had I known these would have stirred so much interest - my most viewed post - I would have shown a full shot. The mittens are attached to the swede-like ribbon. I am almost sure I just used straight pins. They are hanging free. There is a single loop green bow above and the tails are hanging loose. I believe they are at least 10" long, which works for my door. I just attached the bow to a nail which is always in my door with seasonal things hanging. The decorations are stuck in each mitten and they provide enough weight. No styrofoam but that could be used. I hope this helps you and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

    1. I was getting so many spammers using this post to lure people to theirs! Because the mittens are on Pinterest this is still a popular post.
